Greyhound Dog Breed

March 17, 2015 by Leave a Comment

Greyhound Dog Breed

Greyhounds are known for their racing, but they can also make wonderful pets. The Greyhound is a very old European breed of dog, a sighthound which was historically bred for coursing game and more recently, racing. They are apparently the fastest dog on earth. The combination of long, powerful legs, deep chest, flexible spine and slim build allows them to reach average race speeds in excess of 64 kilometres per hour (40 mph).

They are a medium energy dog that needs regular sprints, but they can also spend lots of time relaxing inside (they often sleep for long periods).

They are usually mellow, intelligent, loyal and gentle, but quite independent. They may have quite a high prey drive so may chase small dogs or cats or other animals in some cases. There are rules about allowing them off leash in some areas.

They are usually good with children if children are taught how to interact with them with respect. They often do better in quieter environments and may make great apartment dwellers.

Their short, smooth coats mean easy maintenance.
