What Is A Maltipoo?

You may have seen our adorable little star Maya the Maltipoo, who has featured in many of our videos. She is Kilo the Pug’s friend.

DOG BREED DESCRIPTION:

Two breeds — the Maltese and Poodle — in one.

Maltipoos are hybrid dogs bred from a Maltese and a Poodle parent. This heart-stealing mix was reportedly created in the United States, sometime in the last 20 to 30 years. Maltipoos are often described as friendly, fun, affectionate, gentle, active, smart dogs. They enjoy life, dog games, going for a walk, cuddling on a lap and racing through the house (especially as puppies). They can make wonderful lovable loving companions if well trained and socialized.

Like other cross breeds, they are not recognized by the AKC, but the parents may be registered pure breeds.

Are Maltipoos Good for First Time Dog Owners or Seniors?

They are a good choice for first-time or timid owners because they’re usually easy to train, eager to please and sweet. They tend to do well in homes with elderly people or with older children as well. They enjoy long snuggles and are sensitive to their people’s wants and needs. However they do need lots of attention, walks and play.

Are Maltipoos Hypoallergenic?

Poodle mixes have become very popular as people call them “hypoallergenic,” meaning there should be a reduced possibility that you’ll have an allergic reaction to them. No dog breed is completely hypoallergenic, but Maltipoos come close as they usually shed very little and do not produce much dander. They can be a really good fit for people with allergies.

Do Maltipoos require lots of Grooming?

However, because these dogs have mixed genes, it’s hard to predict whether their coat will be more Poodle or Maltese. Either way, Maltipoos should be bathed once a month and brushed almost daily to avoid matting. Like other Poodle mixes, they require regular trimming of their coat, typically at least once or twice a year. They may need more attention to hair around the face and to keep ears and eyes clean and infection-free. They also require nail trims, frequent teeth cleaning and at least annual vet check-ups.

Are Maltipoos a Healthy Breed?

They are a smaller mixed breed dog with few health issues and can have a lifespan of 10-15 years. Although not that common, they might have digestive, ear, eye or skin issues and allergies according to ASPCA.

Are Maltipoos good for apartments?

Maltipoos can generally adapt to a range of homes, from apartments to houses, but they need to be with their people, and to get exercise. They should live indoors, never outside or in kennels. Maltipoos can be vocal and bark/yap a lot. They may annoy the neighbours if you live in an apartment building.

Do Maltipoos Make Good Watchdogs?

Maltipoos can be pretty vocal. They may alert you to visitors and supicious activities, so in that sense they can be good watch dogs. They are more like a cute little alarm than a guard.

Are Maltipoos Hard to Train?

Maltipoos are usually easy to train. However you need to be patient and positive, especially with potty training. Reward-based training works best so use lots of treats and toys and praise. Avoid aversive techniques or punishment.

Maltipoos can excel in obedience and agility settings. They also make great therapy dogs.
