Unique Dog Breeds Having Fun In The Sun At Festival

Happy #TongueOutTuesday

We’ve been having great weather here in Toronto all summer. The hot, sunny days have been great for all of the dog-friendly festivals and fundraising events. Each of the events we attended have had plenty of fresh water, shade and places to cool off for the dogs.

If you are planning some fun in the sun – please check our 13-important dog heat safety tips for summer, especially if you have a squishy faced breed like my Kilo the Pug.

Dogs cool off by panting so hot sunny days mean lots of ideal models for Tongue Out Tuesday!

A Mexican Xolo

We spotted an unusual dog breed at the Dog Tales Festival with an exceptionally long tongue out . The Xoloitzcuintli dog breed, also known as the Mexican Hairless or Xolo for short, is rumoured to be descended from the first dogs on the North American continent. According to DogTime, there are fewer than 1,000 Xolos in the United States, with approximately 30,000 worldwide. How lucky we were to meet one in person. He was very cute.

Although hairless, they are an affectionate breed who loves to cuddle. The heat given off by their bodies have been a remedy to comfort people with arthritis and other ailments in Mexico and Central America. They come in three sizes — small, medium and large — and have calm personalities and only moderate exercise needs. I found out about the breed when I was doing an ABC dog breed song for kids and needed a breed for X.
