Bichon Frisé Dog Breed

September 16, 2014 by Leave a Comment

Bichon Frisé

Originating in Spain, the Bichon Frisé’s cheerful disposition gained him popularity among the aristocracy until fashions in pampered lapdogs changed. The Bichon continued to flourish as a dog of the streets and a pet of the common people.

The Bichon Frisé can trace its origins back to its Poodle ancestry. Although often mistaken for a Maltese, the Bichon is larger. The Bichon is mostly white but can sport various colours and has brilliant button black eyes and nose, giving the dog a doll like appearance. They are merry and happy dogs, eager to play and affectionate, but also demanding of attention. Early training and socialization is important with this breed, but they make delightful companion dogs when properly trained. The Bichon Frisé  has a history of being entertainers and can be quite vocal.

The Bichon was featured in several of the artist Goya’s paintings. Frequent bathing and brushing is required to maintain this breed’s coat.
