Australian Cattle Dog Dog Breed

September 16, 2014 by Leave a Comment

Australian Cattle Dog

Developed in Australia by stockmen, a number of different breeds contributed to the Australian Cattle Dog’s ancestry. The most significant was the native Dingo.

Energetic, muscular and highly intelligent, Australian Cattle Dogs respond well to structured training and require activities to challenge them physically and mentally. They thrive at agility sports, learning tricks or other athletic activities that help keep their active minds stimulated. Australian Cattle Dogs adore human companionship, but can also be willful and distrustful of strangers and new situations. Australian Cattle Dogs are not known to be a pack dog and so may be unsuited to being in a multi-dog household that can trigger aggression in the breed. Australian Cattle Dogs have wash and wear coats that only require occasional brushing. Their red or blue coats “blow out” once a year.

A true working dog, the Australian Cattle Dog likes to keep busy and should have daily outdoor exercise. This breed is better suited as working, herding, or guard dogs rather than family pets.
