Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in North America.
The Golden Retriever is believed to have been developed by a Scotsman in the mid-19th century for hunting and retrieving game (on land and in water). The Golden Retriever was first granted breed status in Britain in 1913 and by the AKC in 1925.
A large, athletic breed, Golden Retrievers are usually incredibly gentle, loyal and affectionate. They are intelligent and highly trainable, which makes them great candidates for a variety of roles, ranging from specialized therapy and service dogs, to search and rescue, to sports and more. Goldens are often seen as the ultimate family pet, and generally do well with children. Their loving and generous spirit makes the breed too welcoming to be a true guard dog.
Golden Retrievers have medium-length coats that shed frequently and require regular grooming. The Golden Retriever comes in a variety of gold shades as light as cream to deeper brassier golds.
Popularized for hunting due to the breed’s gentle mouth retrieving prey, they are often a high energy dog that requires lots daily exercise and training. Golden Retrievers require room to run around and are usually more suited to fenced-in suburban and country dwellings.
